for your beach wedding or event!
The post is about the family room make-over, which entails adding a fireplace into the built in niche (for an old school reflection television). Again, I apologize for the before picture, it is from the real estate listing. The far wall in the family room had a large niche, which we didn't need. So we put in an electric fireplace with a large scale tile surround and cabinets on either side.
Here it is in progress. You can see how large the tiles are by the blue spacers.
We chose a porcelain tile that had the look of stone. The tiles were sized at one foot tall by four feet long! It was very economical, but it did cause our labor costs to go up. You would think that extra large tiles would be cheaper to lay, but the opposite is true. It is much harder to work with and took some careful planning by the installer. Here's the tile at the store:
And here's what the installer had to say once I sent them the details:
We bought the fireplace ourselves on Amazon for $430. We had a couple of contractors quote the job, and each had allowed for a $1,500 fireplace, so I was a little nervous that this one would look cheap or not work correctly. But it's been six months and the fireplace looks great and is working perfectly!
The whole project took about two weeks, just because the contractor had other jobs to do in between, and the coordination of the electricians and framers and tilers, etc. They were in our house about 8 days. Here are some more completed shots:
We left room on either side of the fireplace for a cabinet. To tie the rooms together, we used the same white Shaker style cabinet as the kitchen and the same granite. The cabinets are small but are great for hiding electronics!
I think we need to add a shelf over the cabinet, in the middle, but my husband likes it how it is. What do you all think? Feel free to leave me a message in the comments. I'm thinking a glass shelf with just a little something on it. Or maybe a small mirror or piece of art?
Another "after" shot, a little closer in:
So that's the family room, stay tuned for the kitchen, it's up next! Anna
